Last week I wrote an article about positivity being key – being key to everything; life, work, relationships, industry…everything.
What I’d like to mention this week is a perfect example of negativity within industry and how there will be those that will try to bring you down and will also try to stop you where you stand.
I had been working on a project for 3 years with a group interstate. That’s right, 3 years! It was a long haul like this because of certain variables over time such as the annual budgets and the changing of the guards. But throughout this entire time I had been working in the background with one gent doing the hard yards of nutting through the technical information and data that dated back for some to the 1980’s and some to the recent 90’s and 2000’s.
It was disheartening and tear raising to receive the phone call the other day that, even after three years of hard work and doing the hard slog of all the technical working out, and supplying the information needed to be able to re-quote and provide an upgrade for the group, they went with another company based on price. This is another example of quantity chosen over quality. My direct contact fought for us and fought for the Australian manufacturer (us) where the entire unit – especially (my product) the industrial gearbox would be Australian Made & Owned; however, his new guards chose price rather than quality and longevity. I know I’m not the only one that has been through this, many people go through this all the time, and will continue to do so. I guess that’s what makes this a dog-eat-dog-world. It’s just horrifying when you get reminded of it, because we also need some sort of recall for faith in humanity. Like I’ve said, I’m a positive person, but it still gets to me when you’re reminded of the unfair and underhandedness there is in industry.
I guess it’s mainly hurtful because of the length of time and amount of labor, effort and determination you put into it…3 years! You create a bond with a project after that amount of time, you learn every nook and cranny of the place, all the ins and outs, all the quirks and idiosyncrasies…to then have someone stop it all and bring it to a halt to have it crumble down around you. It is disheartening. I know a lot of you are thinking “oh toughen up princess” or “drink a cup of concrete” and I say this because sometimes I think this too, and I know this helps you grow a thicker skin, and (like Christina Aguilera’s song says) helps you become a fighter, or like the song I have playing over and over in my head at the moment “I am titanium. You shoot me down, but I won’t fall, I am titanium…” But industry support is also vital and significant.
I guess I mention this whole scenario because I want you all to remember – if you have been in this situation, if you have felt let down by the system, let down by the industry, let down by the logic that was – don’t give up because great things take time. I am a pretty tough cookie myself, but I can still be disheartened. When surrounded by the right people, the right words and the right energy such as encouragement, you can get through it and move with the future of many possibilities. Try not to be price based and think of quality patronage! Remember to support local and small business and support Australian manufacturing. Don’t give up – great things take time.
